Frequently Asked Questions 1. Why should my kids learn a foreign language at such a young age?
Attaining language fluency is a long-term process that varies among individuals. Several factors affect how fluent an individual can become with the language. These factors include (1) how much exposure to the foreign language does the child receive outside of the classroom, (2) the child’s age, (3) the learning pace of the child, and (4) overall skill level of the child. When students are having difficulties learning the material and the families are spending some time at home reinforcing the material, we recommend that families use resources to supplement class instruction such as music, audio books, DVDs to help students get more comfortable with the first stage of learning a language, listening. Once the student feels more comfortable with this stage, he or she may be ready to move onto to the understanding and speaking. Every student’s situation is different and can be addressed on a case by case basis. For more information on resources to supplement the language learning at home, visit the Family Resources page.
